M.O.R.T. REBRAND

The Mount Olive Robotics Team 11 is one of the original FIRST Robotics teams. Located at Mount Olive High School in NJ, Team 11 just passed its 22-year anniversary.

After the pandemic, I had the opportunity to rebrand MORT, updating its retro design into something modern and recognizable. For this project, I spearheaded the design team, creating the new logo, with a modern and aggressive feel. I also worked in conjunction with advisors to create the new jerseys, a line of merchandise, and several other smaller designs.

Logo Development

The objective in redesigning was to completely revamp the original logo, transitioning it from an outdated, cumbersome look to a sleek, modern design. While aiming for this transformation, the team sought to retain the essence of the mascot—a robot-pirate-skeleton.

The original logo (above) featured the mascot in a bulky, angular form. Though friendly, the team was looking for something more intimidating and recognizable. All vector formats, lineart variations, and other versions of the logo had been lost and were often seen with a dark gray rather than pure black.

Throughout the development process, the team meticulously identified key elements for preservation, such as the iconic eyepatch, bandana, and the original positioning of the mascot. Above, you'll find the ultimate iteration in full color.

The new design accentuates the pirate essence by incorporating a marauder hat while maintaining the distinctive bandana. The hat's silhouette cleverly forms an 'M,' elegantly framing the robotic countenance and casting a dramatic shadow. Retaining the skull-like jawline and angular facial features, the subdued gray tones infuse a heightened sense of mechanical shine. In the full-color rendition, one eye gleams in a familiar golden hue, contrasting sharply against the eyepatch that shrouds the other in darkness.

Below, you can see the logo in various colorways, still maintaining a recognizability.

As seen below, the new brand was implemented into the team’s social media.

Uniform & Merch Design

The uniform redesign was inspired by the growing trend of e-sports uniforms and teams. MORT wanted a bold, lightning design; something unseen in the world of FRC (First Robotics Competition).
